Anyone can join our main choir, which has about 85 members. Music students and others from around the college have great fun singing a wide range of repertoire. in a purposeful but relaxed atmosphere.

In addition to our large choir, we also have a student-run a cappella group as well as a staff-led Chamber Choir. Chamber Choir usually sing Choral Evensong in such venues as Birmingham Cathedral and we tackle a range of challenging repertoire each year. A Cappella do a variety of covers of contemporary popular music.

For instrumentalists, we run an Orchestra, Wind Band and String Orchestra. All of these larger ensembles are timetabled into the day so that students who have a long journey to college do not have to stay behind past four o'clock.

Any student can join wind band, which plays lots of enjoyable (and often quite cheesy!) repertoire. We have informal auditions for the other two ensembles so that we can balance numbers and decide where people will sit.

Groups and Bands

Our Music Society runs a number of smaller groups, which typically include:

  • Folk Band
  • A Cappella
  • Various pop and rock ensembles
  • Early Music Group

Student-led activity is very important and we typically have a gig focussing on contemporary pop styles in a local venue at the end of each year. We also have a staff-led soul band which play at a variety of college events across the the year.

Chamber Music

The opportunity to participate in high quality chamber music is a vital part of being a music student at King Eds. We run a range of ensembles from String and Wind Quartets through to more unusual mixed ensembles, taking on challenging repertoire such as Brahms, Dvorak and Shostakovich.
